After Ferrari had built and raced a series of six- and
eight-cylinder cars under the Dino banner to commemorate Enzo's
fallen son Alfredino, a road-going car would soon follow and in
1968 the gorgeous mid-engined, two-seat Dino 206 GT appeared. Like
many Ferraris of the period, the Dino's beautiful body was designed
by Pininfarina and produced by Scaglietti, and in this case was
aluminum for the entire run of cars built in late 1968 and 1969.
Powered by a transverse mounted aluminum block 2.0-liter V6
delivering 160 horsepower, production of the 206 GT ended in 1969
to make way for the larger displacement and more powerful 246 GT.
While visually very similar, the 246 would feature a 2.4-liter
engine with a cast iron engine block, producing 180 horsepower for
cars sent to the United States. Successfully showcasing that
Ferrari could build a smaller mid-engined sports car, the Dino is
also considered by many to be one of the most attractive
Pininfarina designs ever commissioned by Ferrari.
Generally grouped into three broad categories, the 246 began with a
series of 357 vehicles known as the "L" cars, distinguishable by
their similar wheels to the earlier 206 GT. These are followed by
the "M" cars, of which 507 were built with Cromodora wheels and a
modified windshield wiper arrangement. Finally, the "E" series of
cars would appear in late 1971 which would include the 246 GTS,
incorporating a stylish Targa-style removable roof providing a
desirable open-air option.
Completed on 30 August 1973, this "E" series 1973 Ferrari Dino 246
GTS was one of approximately 681 examples produced for the 1973
model year. Originally finished in Argento Metallizzato, this
example was optioned with Daytona seats, air-conditioning, and
power windows. Reportedly refinished by an authorized Ferrari
center in its current eye-catching shade of Yellow, fourteen-inch
Cromodora wheels finished in satin silver with Dino center caps
complete the stunning exterior specification. Trimmed in Nero
leather, the interior of this Ferrari is highlighted by iconic
Daytona seats in addition to manuals, a leather tool roll, and a
front trunk mounted fifth Cromodora spare wheel. Retaining its
numbers matching engine and transmission, this 246 GTS exudes the
very best qualities of both Ferrari and the Dino brand.
