Just bring your enthusiasm for creating colorful silks for belly-dance veils, hip wraps, and skirts, as well as for pareos (sarongs) and everyday wear, for gifts, etc. Class will use ready-made silk scarves as well as silk yardage for belly-dance and other garb. Since belly-dance is from the Middle East, we can use dye colors that were unknown in Medieval Europe. Due to the use such garb goes through, we will not use natural dyes, because they take a long time to be ready for dyeing and are not as wash-fast as modern dyes. This class will use modern dyes, most like acid (vinegar or citric acid) dyes which do not require steaming. Students should bring aprons, hair tie-back, sun-screen, hat, water or other beverage. Wear garb and shoes that can get a splash or two of color without stopping the universe. NOTE: Students may bring their own pre-washed and well-rinsed 100% silk fabric, scarf, or garment to dye but not yards and yards of it. If you have a special project, contact me. No other fabrics allowed. Here are some general numbers to play with: Rectangular hip wraps are 12x60” or 20x60”. Wider or half-circle hip scarves are 30x60”. Dance veils are usually 3’x36” wide, but can be much larger and can also be half-circles. Dance skirts are often 13-panels, 38 to 44” long by whatever width is needed for waist fit. Harem pants are usually 38 - 40” long. | none |
